My Wilmington

As I was preparing to write this post I became more and more convinced of one thing.  Wilmington is awesome.  Allow me to introduce myself.  I am Bethany Roberts, Interior Design Alumni class of ’08, Assistant Director of Admissions and City of Wilmington resident and enthusiast.  There simply isn’t enough room in a blog post for me to tell you everything that there is to do in Wilmington so I’ve selected some favorites of our students and myself.  Did you know that Wilmington has several vibrant neighborhoods?  I live in the Cool Spring neighborhood and walk to DCAD every day.  From May to October the Cool Spring Park hosts a farmers market with local produce, innovative crafts, delicious food vendors and live music.  Neighborhoods like Trolley Square and Little Italy offer an amazing array of locally owned and operated restaurants for every taste and neighborhoods like Midtown Brandywine and Trinity Vicinity offer picturesque streets and architecture.  The Triangle Neighborhood and Hilltop are also some neighborhoods to check out as well. DCAD is located within easy walking distance of several parks that offer biking, walking and picnicking options.

To offer some time to forget about school and work Wilmington offers a variety of festivals and events that cater to a variety of interests.   Wilmington also has an extensive amount of visual and performing arts centers that provide inspiration throughout the city.

The downtown area provides ample entertainment and dining options.  On Market Street alone you will find fine dining like Chelsea Tavern and Orillas Tapas Bar, and more student budget friendly places like LOMA Coffee, Brew HaHa, Qdoba, Quiznos, DiMeo’s Pizza, Extreme Pizza and Bains Deli.  Market Street is also the home of World Café Live, The First State Ballet Company, The Grand Opera House, Film Brothers, and the DuPont Theatre.

No matter what your interests, Wilmington is a place to have adventures and call home.  It is a place that I chosen to live in and I can tell you I am never bored!  I hope you take the time to visit if you haven’t had the chance, we would love to show you around!

Homework Break

I’m taking a break from my homework to post this blog and I’d like to show some of the work I’ve created this semester. We’re entering our 7th week on Monday :D and we’re about to start walk cycles! Our final animation for this semester is coming up soon and we’re getting like…4 and a half weeks to work on it. I’m starting to think about what mine will be about…or even what style of animation it will be in. Last week in 3D computer animation, we learned how to create a skeleton for our characters so that they can move when we animate them. This week we’ll be binding the skin to the skeleton properly. I’m starting to really like 3D computer animation, however, I don’t know enough about it to want to major in it or anything. At least not yet. I really like traditional hand-drawn. I’m really good with the program AfterEffects. Its easy for me to animate, then color it in photoshop, make a background in photoshop, and just put them all together like a puzzle in AE. Then add sound or whatever in Premier. These are all things I learned this year, and I’m enjoying toying around with them now. Well anyway, I have to get back to doing some homework, but enjoy the clip and MudBox piece below.

Student Show!

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Hey! My name is Dani and I am a first-year photography student here at DCAD. It’s been pretty excellent here so far. As a photo student, I began working in my major starting the first day of second semester. So far, we have done an overview of the basics, set up personal blogs to write about other photographers, and completed our first assignment.

The first assignment was on the exploration of light and the utilization of it in a creative way. Some people chose to focus on the light as more of a design element while others made it the focal point of their photograph. It was extremely interesting to see the different ways that each student approached the assignment, but also how all of our work looked unified by the commonality of light.

This week, we are working on decisive moment/stop-action photography. The objective is to freeze time and create an image that stands as a familiarity as well as being something that can’t be seen outside of a photographic image. I’m pretty excited to see the outcome of this project and how each person handled the assignment.
