My Wilmington

As I was preparing to write this post I became more and more convinced of one thing.  Wilmington is awesome.  Allow me to introduce myself.  I am Bethany Roberts, Interior Design Alumni class of ’08, Assistant Director of Admissions and City of Wilmington resident and enthusiast.  There simply isn’t enough room in a blog post for me to tell you everything that there is to do in Wilmington so I’ve selected some favorites of our students and myself.  Did you know that Wilmington has several vibrant neighborhoods?  I live in the Cool Spring neighborhood and walk to DCAD every day.  From May to October the Cool Spring Park hosts a farmers market with local produce, innovative crafts, delicious food vendors and live music.  Neighborhoods like Trolley Square and Little Italy offer an amazing array of locally owned and operated restaurants for every taste and neighborhoods like Midtown Brandywine and Trinity Vicinity offer picturesque streets and architecture.  The Triangle Neighborhood and Hilltop are some neighborhoods to check out as well. DCAD is located within easy walking distance of several parks that offer biking, walking and picnicking options.

For some time to forget about school and work Wilmington offers a variety of festivals and events that cater to a variety of interests.   Wilmington also has an extensive amount of visual and performing arts centers that provide inspiration throughout the city.

The downtown area provides ample entertainment and dining options.  On Market Street alone you will find fine dining like Chelsea Tavern and Orillas Tapas Bar, and more student budget friendly places like LOMA Coffee, Brew HaHa, Qdoba, Quiznos, DiMeo’s Pizza, Extreme Pizza and Bains Deli.  Market Street is also the home of World Café Live, The First State Ballet Company, The Grand Opera House, Film Brothers, and the DuPont Theatre.

No matter what your interests, Wilmington is a place to have adventures and call home.  It is a place that I have chosen to live in and I can tell you I am never bored!  I hope you take the time to visit if you haven’t had the chance, we would love to show you around!

Homework Break

I’m taking a break from my homework to post this blog and I’d like to show some of the work I’ve created this semester. We’re entering our 7th week on Monday 😀 and we’re about to start walk cycles! Our final animation for this semester is coming up soon and we’re getting like…4 and a half weeks to work on it. I’m starting to think about what mine will be about…or even what style of animation it will be in. Last week in 3D computer animation, we learned how to create a skeleton for our characters so that they can move when we animate them. This week we’ll be binding the skin to the skeleton properly. I’m starting to really like 3D computer animation, however, I don’t know enough about it to want to major in it or anything. At least not yet. I really like traditional hand-drawn. I’m really good with the program AfterEffects. Its easy for me to animate, then color it in photoshop, make a background in photoshop, and just put them all together like a puzzle in AE. Then add sound or whatever in Premier. These are all things I learned this year, and I’m enjoying toying around with them now. Well anyway, I have to get back to doing some homework, but enjoy the clip and MudBox piece below.

Student Show!

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Hey! My name is Dani and I am a first-year photography student here at DCAD. It’s been pretty excellent here so far. As a photo student, I began working in my major starting the first day of second semester. So far, we have done an overview of the basics, set up personal blogs to write about other photographers, and completed our first assignment.

The first assignment was on the exploration of light and the utilization of it in a creative way. Some people chose to focus on the light as more of a design element while others made it the focal point of their photograph. It was extremely interesting to see the different ways that each student approached the assignment, but also how all of our work looked unified by the commonality of light.

This week, we are working on decisive moment/stop-action photography. The objective is to freeze time and create an image that stands as a familiarity as well as being something that can’t be seen outside of a photographic image. I’m pretty excited to see the outcome of this project and how each person handled the assignment.

BBBAAAAACCCCCK!!!!!

Hey Guys!

I’m back at DCAD after a long winter break, and at the start of a new semester. It took a while for me to adjust to the new schedule, so I haven’t been posting lately. But now that I’m back on track, I’ve learned to manage my time properly again. My classes this semester are waaaaaay awwweeeessommmeee. I have “History of Narrative Film” that I thought would be boring, but every Monday, everyone who takes that class goes to the local Theater N to watch movies in a real movie theater on “the big screen”. So because its the “History” of narrative film, we’re watching the firsts…and the classics. Then on Fridays (for some students, Thursdays), we’re split up into different classes to get the lecture portion of the class. This was the point when I thought the class would get super boring (because I have a tendency to fall asleep during lectures), but the information being taught is equally as exciting and interesting. On top of History of Narrative Film, animators also take a Video Editing class, where we’ve been given the liberty to make our own “films” (they’re like…a minute long each so far). Our teacher is encouraging us to incorporate styles or means of animation within our films to improve them..which is funnnn, because I really enjoy creating and adding my own special effects to my movies.

What elseeee. On Mondays for me, I have my Character Animation class. Its the most important class of the year, pretty much. We take everything we’ve learned from Animation 1, and Character Animation last semester, and apply it to new exercises that not only give our characters personality, but help with the fluidity of our characters’ movement and the narrative of our animations. Coming into DCAD, I had never worked with animation as a medium before, and now I feel that I’ve discovered a side of me thats waaaaay more expressive. So basically, any class that aides with this process gets me excited for my future. I’ve been checking out colleges too, and my top two choices are RISD and UArts. Any opinions? I’ve been weighing my pros and cons.

But yeeaaah. I also have a new elective class called “Creation, Procreation, & Recreation” which I have hw to finish due tomorrow. Its like a biology course. So I’m closing this post on that note. Ha. I’m glad to be back the the DCAD blog.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Just as the title says, its Thanksgiving! I’m sitting back at home now watching a movie with my brother (with my dog on my lap.) I am soooo full of turkey. Last week some of my DCAD friends and I went up to Philly for the Philadelphia Portfolio Review. I stopped by at the tables for UARTs, MICA, and Parsons Paris and my friends went to other places like RISD and Cooper Union. We ran into the DCAD table! and said hello to our friends from the administration office. Afterwards, we stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe only a few blocks away from the convention center, ate some food, and made friends with our waitress! She asked us to post pictures of her (because she saw that my friend had his camera out) so that she can be famous one day. Lol. She was sweet. Check out my Photos at the bottom! I also turned in my puppet animation that I’ve been working on. We were asked to build two interacting puppets from wire armatures and foam (and whatever else material we felt like adding – I used fur from a teddy bear I bought). I think mine turned out rather nicely. I’m just sharing some stills from the final. If you check out DCAD’s library blog, you can watch the full animation soon. I need to send Helena (our Librarian) the link to my video.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Courage the Cowardly Dog!

John Dilworth Guys! John Dilworth: most famous for his creation of “Courage the Cowardly Dog”, came to DCAD as a visiting artist to share with us a presentation about himself and his work. AAAAANNNNNDDDDD not only that!, but he also came into my Animation class and took over to teach for a few hours. I am sooooo happy to share with you guys how awesome that experience was. He’s very well known for an almost horror/science fiction sort of animation style, as well as being able to exaggerate his characters to a horrifying extreme. You’ve all seen Courage right? So you remember the famous tooth with the hole in it, or the way Courage speaks to Muriel and Eustace by changing into highly exaggerated shapes, instead of talking to them. That show was certainly a childhood favorite of mine, you can imagine how stoked I was! I got him to sign a poster that DCAD made to advertise that he was coming. During the class, he taught us how he uses key framing in his animations, and how he has absolutely no limits. He then gave us a small assignment that he critiqued individually with us during class. It felt like he belonged to DCAD, because of how hands on he was, like the other teachers here. He was sooooooo animated as a person (go figure)..but he was able to make us laugh as well as teach..engaging the students in the work. He’s truly a person I admire. But anyweee. SO much about John Dilworth! I could go on forever. But apart from that, DCAD had a successful Preview Day. I was excited to see so many new faces who will (hopefully) be going to DCAD next year. I helped out with giving a tour to most of the prospective animators. It feels like forever ago since I’ve been in their shoes. 🙂 Thanksgiving is coming up soon!! So DCAD is closing for the weekend. And any other news I have to share is mainly homework related. Ha..Animators are starting most of their final projects for the semester, which I am TOTALLY psyched about because its open ended – pretty much. From the beginning of the year until now we’ve been focusing on the individual techniques and styles of animation and storyboarding, one by one: traditional and modern, and now we have been given a free assignment that requires us to choose from any of those skills. I’m thinking about doing traditional 2D hand drawn animation, colored in photoshop, with a background edited in through After Effects. I hope it goes well. But until then..I shall post its progress. 😀 Feel free to comment on any of these blogs or anything if you want! I’m always open to answer any questions. Even if I don’t post too often, I check this quite a bit. Or even if there’s anything you’d like me to post about, Drop me a line! Thanks!
